Nothing on a Thermador induction cooktop burns, glows or wears out the way a coil does. When it fails, the cause is almost always heat, a sensor, or a lost connection. Start with what the appliance is actually telling you. ### A single zone stops working One dead zone with the rest of the surface healthy is good news. It narrows the fault to that zone’s inverter board, its coil, or the sensor sitting under the glass at its centre. Coils rarely fail on their own. Inverter boards fail when they run hot, and they run hot when the cooling path is obstructed. That is the first thing we check, because it also explains why the same board failed twice. ### The cooktop shuts down mid-cook A Thermador induction top protects itself. When the electronics under the glass exceed their limit, the surface reduces power or stops. Three things cause that here. The first is airflow. Induction cooktops pull cooling air from below and exhaust it through a vent. Installed over a drawer, over a wall oven, or into a too-tight cutout, that air path gets choked. Jacksonville kitchens that were retrofitted rather than built for induction are the usual offenders. The second is a dirty or blocked vent. Grease and dust build on the intake mesh and reduce flow long before anyone notices. The third is a genuine thermistor or board fault. That is a repair, not an adjustment, and we quote it in writing. ### Pans that come and go Induction only heats ferrous cookware. If a pan is recognised and then dropped, the usual culprit is the pan, not the cooktop. Thin bases warp with heat and lift off the glass. A base that no longer sits flat loses coupling and the zone reports an empty ring. Test with a heavy flat-bottomed pan before booking a call. A magnet on the base tells you whether the pan is even a candidate. If a known-good pan drops out on one zone only, the fault is in the appliance. ### Touch controls Late, repeated or ignored presses usually trace to moisture or to the control board’s ribbon connection, not to the glass. Standing water on the surface confuses capacitive controls. So does a wet cloth left across the panel. If the behaviour clears when the glass is dry and cool, nothing is broken. Persistent misreads with dry glass point at the touch board. On a full-surface induction top, that board also carries the zone mapping, so we test it before replacing anything expensive. ### Noise Induction is not silent. Buzzing at high power is normal, and it changes with the pan. A laminated base can rattle at frequency. What is not normal is a cooling fan that runs constantly, or a fan that whines and drones. That is a bearing, and a failing fan will take the inverter board with it if it is ignored. ### Cracks in the glass We do not repair cracked induction glass. A crack, a chip at the edge, or a hard impact means the surface is replaced. Anything else risks a live surface above wet electronics.
