Ducting is often the real fault. ### Symptoms we get called for - Blower runs at full speed but smoke still crosses the room - Downdraft rises part way and then stops or drops back - Hood controls light up but the motor does not start - Noise has changed to a rattle, a whine or a rhythmic knock - Lights work while every fan speed does nothing - Hood switches itself on or changes speed with no input Ventilation is the appliance most often blamed for someone else’s mistake. A hood can be in perfect condition and still fail to clear a kitchen, because the performance you feel is decided by the duct, not the motor. So we start at the wall, not at the hood. ### Weak extraction with a healthy blower If the blower spins hard and smoke still drifts past the canopy, look for one of four things. The duct run is too long or has too many turns. Every elbow costs airflow, and a hood that was moved during a remodel usually gained elbows. The duct diameter was reduced somewhere. A transition down to a smaller pipe in an attic or a soffit throttles the whole system, and it is invisible from the kitchen. The exterior damper is stuck. In Jacksonville that is often paint, a wasp nest, or corrosion. Near the beaches, salt air seizes exterior dampers within a few years. Or the house has no make-up air. A tight modern kitchen with a strong hood cannot exhaust what it cannot replace. The hood pulls against a sealed envelope and moves far less than its rating. We check all four before recommending a part. ### Blower faults A hood with working lights and a dead fan is an electrical fault, not a mechanical one. The lighting and motor circuits are separate. Remote and inline blowers complicate this. If your blower sits in the attic or on an exterior wall, the failure and the controls are in different places, and diagnosing from the kitchen alone is guesswork. Tell us at booking whether the blower is in the hood or remote, so we arrive with access planned. Attic-mounted blowers in this climate live hot and humid. Bearings and capacitors are the usual casualties. ### Noise Noise tells you a lot. A rattle at one speed only is usually a loose baffle, a filter that is not seated, or a panel screw that has backed out. It is cheap to fix. A whine that rises with speed is a bearing. A rhythmic knock is an imbalanced wheel, often caused by grease built up unevenly on the blades. Grease loading is the reason we ask how the filters are cleaned. Filters belong in the dishwasher, on a regular schedule. A loaded baffle filter both starves the blower and unbalances the wheel. ### Downdrafts Downdraft ventilation adds a mechanism, and mechanisms fail. A downdraft that rises partway and stops is usually the drive belt, the motor, or an obstruction in the track. Grease and crumbs collect in the slot and bind the carriage. Cleaning the track is part of every visit. A downdraft that will not rise at all is a control or a motor fault, and those are separated by a simple test at the unit. Downdrafts also share the duct problem above, and they suffer it more. They fight rising heat by design, so any restriction in the run shows up immediately. ### Coastal installs Along 32250 and 32233, salt air attacks hoods hard. Stainless pits at the seams, exterior caps corrode, and roof or wall dampers stop closing. A damper that no longer closes lets humid air back into the kitchen and lets the blower motor sit in salt.
