Storm Season and Built-In Control Boards

Jacksonville gets roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year. Most of them are brief afternoon cells between June and September, and most of them cause no visible problem at all.
The damage is cumulative rather than dramatic. A built-in appliance that dies in October usually did not die from one strike. It died from three seasons of short interruptions and voltage sags.
What actually reaches the board
Direct lightning damage is rare and unmistakable. Scorch marks, a smell, several appliances dead at once.
Far more common is everything short of that. A momentary outage that drops and restores in under a second. A brownout while the grid recovers. A surge as service comes back and every air conditioner in the neighborhood restarts at once.
Electronics tolerate any one of those. Repeated cycles are what wears electrolytic capacitors and stresses power supply sections on a control board.
How it shows up
The symptoms are recognisable once you know them.
A display lights but does not respond to touch. Controls register presses that were never made. An appliance runs a cycle correctly but forgets its settings. Something turns on by itself. A speed oven or induction cooktop starts a cycle and aborts with no pattern to it.
Refrigeration hides it better. A column with a failing board can hold temperature for weeks and then start missing defrost cycles, which shows up as ice on the rear wall rather than as an electronic fault.
Older neighborhoods take more of it
Mature tree canopy is the reason. Riverside, Avondale, San Marco, Old Ortega and Old Mandarin have large trees over distribution lines, and limb contact accounts for a lot of brief interruptions.
Those same neighborhoods have another problem stacked on top. A century of staged electrical upgrades means dedicated appliance circuits are the exception, not the rule. A Thermador induction cooktop or speed oven sharing a circuit with countertop outlets sees voltage sag every time something else starts.
That produces intermittent faults indistinguishable from a failing board — which is exactly why we do not replace boards on symptoms alone.
We test the supply first
Fitting a new control board behind an unstable circuit is money spent twice. We have seen the same appliance eat two and three boards because nobody checked what was feeding it.
So the sequence is: confirm the supply, confirm the circuit is dedicated and correctly sized, confirm the connections at the appliance, and only then condemn the board.
Sometimes the honest answer is that you need an electrician rather than us. We would rather say that than sell a part.
What owners can do
Note the date. If an appliance changed behaviour immediately after a storm, tell us when you book. It genuinely narrows the diagnosis.
Consider surge protection at the panel rather than at the outlet. Built-in appliances are hard-wired or behind cabinetry, so a plug-in strip is not an option for most of them.
Do not repeatedly power-cycle an appliance that is behaving strangely. If a reset does not hold the first time, further cycling adds stress without adding information.
After an extended outage
Longer outages bring a different problem, and refrigeration takes the worst of it.
When power returns, a column refrigerator restarts against a system that is still under head pressure. Most units handle that with a built-in delay. What they handle less well is repeated restarts during an unstable restoration, when service comes back, drops again, and returns a few minutes later.
If a column was warm for several hours, give it a full day to recover before judging it. If it has not returned to setpoint by then, the fault is real and worth diagnosing rather than waiting out.
