What Thermador Appliance Installers Should Check

Published

Good Thermador appliance installers measure the cabinet opening against the installation instructions before delivery day, confirm that the circuit, gas line, water supply and duct suit the exact model, anchor the unit, and then run every function while you watch. Most trouble after a new kitchen goes in traces back to one of those steps being rushed: a cooktop starved of gas, a column squeezed against a range, a dishwasher drain hose kinked behind the cabinet.

Before delivery: the opening and the panels

Every Thermador appliance ships with instructions giving the exact cutout, the cabinet depth and where the power or water connection must sit. Get them before the cabinetmaker builds the boxes. Panel-ready models raise the stakes. A Freedom column such as the T30IR905SP hides behind a custom front, and the Star Sapphire dishwasher comes as DWHD661EPR for a custom panel, besides DWHD661EFP and DWHD661EFM with Professional or Masterpiece handles. A dishwasher panel heavier than the door springs allow will flop open instead of holding its position.

In older homes in Riverside and Avondale or Ortega, confirm that the existing wiring and gas piping can feed a professional range before you buy, not on delivery day.

Gas cooktops and ranges

The gas line has to carry every burner at full flame at once. The 36-inch Masterpiece SGSX365FS totals 60,200 BTU on natural gas, including an 18,000 BTU Star Burner. Undersized pipe or a misset regulator shows up as flames that shrink each time another burner is turned on, and a propane kitchen needs the appliance converted before first use.

After connection, every joint gets a soapy-water leak test, never a match. A range also needs its anti-tip bracket fastened to the wall or floor with the rear foot engaged, so it cannot tip forward when someone leans on an open door. Each burner should then light with its cap sitting flat; if one clicks without catching, see cooktop clicking but not lighting.

New gas work is a good prompt to add alarms. The NFPA warns that the smell added to natural gas and propane can fade from notice within a minute or two, so a fuel gas alarm near the appliance and outside sleeping rooms, placed per NFPA 715, is worth having; it should go off once gas reaches 10 percent of its lower explosive limit, or sooner. Carbon monoxide alarms meeting UL 2034 go on every level and outside sleeping areas, but the CPSC advises against putting them in the kitchen or over a fuel-burning appliance.

Refrigeration columns and ice

Freedom columns breathe through ventilation openings that trim must never cover, and Thermador’s guide asks for at least 1¼ inches (3 cm) between a column and an electric or gas cooker. A column pushed hard against a range to save space is a common reason for a column running warm or icing up. An ice-making column needs a water line with a reachable shutoff, checked for drips after the first fill. Throw out the first few batches of ice and give the column several hours to reach temperature before loading food.

Hoods and dishwashers

A hood depends on its duct: the size and the short, straight route the instructions call for, a working damper and a proper roof or wall cap. Ask whether local building rules want make-up air for a hood that size. When a hood roars but smoke still drifts across the room, the ventilation is usually at fault, not the fan. On a Professional Series hood, point out the FILTER light, which comes on after 40 hours of running to say the baffle filters need cleaning.

A dishwasher needs a hot water supply, a drain hose with a high loop or air gap, brackets screwed to the counter or cabinet sides, and a level tub. A hose crushed while the unit slid into place is the classic install fault behind a dishwasher left standing in water.

The walkthrough before the crew leaves

Wall ovens, speed ovens and induction cooktops each need the dedicated circuit and breaker size printed on their spec sheet. Before signing off, have the installers run everything with you: each burner lit, the oven heating with its door closing cleanly, the column cooling, the dishwasher filling and draining, the hood on every speed, and no gas smell. Photograph each rating plate. If something misbehaves later, Northbank Kitchen Service is an independent repair service, and the $80 diagnostic pins down the fault and gives a firm figure before any work begins.

Installation · what it costs

What would this cost to put right?

A note is not a quote. What it takes to settle the fault described above starts at a flat $80 to diagnose, credited to the repair, and lands in the bands below once parts and labor are counted.

Thermador repair bands in Jacksonville, Duval County — parts and labor fitted, with the $80 diagnostic credited against them.
What failed Cost, fitted
The diagnostic visit $80, credited
Igniter, spark module or surface element $200–$500

A band, not a quote. Which part failed, whether the appliance has to come out of its cabinet to reach it, and how much of it has to be stripped to get at the part all move the figure inside it, so the firm number is written down once the fault has a name. Written estimate before any part is ordered or fitted. The whole price book is on the pricing page.

Follow-up questions

What would this cost to put right?

A flat $80 diagnostic gets a technician to the kitchen and names the fault. Repairs of the kind described here run $200–$500 for parts and labor, with igniter, spark module or surface element ($200–$500) at the top of the range. Written estimate before any part is ordered or fitted.

Can I check any of this myself before booking?

Some of it. Condenser grilles, hood filters and vent paths are owner work and cost nothing to look at. Anything behind a panel, inside a sealed system or on a live circuit is not. Describe the symptom on the phone and we will say which one it is.

Which appliances does this apply to?

Gas cooktops, ranges, column refrigeration, dishwashers, ventilation. We work on Thermador and nothing else, across Jacksonville and Duval County. EPA Section 608 certified technicians for sealed-system work.

What owners said after the visit

4.7 out of 5, from 66 customer reviews. A few of them are below; the rest sit on the page for the repair or the part of town they were filed in. One kitchen and one fault apiece, printed as they reached us.
  • Three blocks from the ocean, the condenser had matted into a grey felt and the column ran without ever satisfying. He cleaned it back to bare fin, checked the fan draw, and showed me how to keep on top of it.

    Cornelius P.

  • Water was collecting under the crisper and freezing into a sheet. He cleared a blocked drain tube, warmed the trough and fitted a new duct seal. No ice since, and he left the kick panel cleaner than he found it.

    Leopold S.

  • Our column was sheeting frost across the back wall and wanted defrosting by hand every fortnight. The defrost thermostat was the culprit, not the board somebody else had quoted for. Six weeks on there is no frost at all.

    Everett S.
