Thermador Column Refrigerator Repair in Jacksonville

Built-in columns that run warm, ice up, or stop making ice. Diagnosed on site, quoted in writing.

A Thermador column is cabinetry, not a freestanding fridge. It is trimmed into a fixed opening. The millwork was cut for that exact width, and the custom panel was hung to match the run. Pulling one is a two-person job with a plan for the floor underneath.

That changes how we work. We diagnose in place wherever the fault allows it. The column comes forward only when the sealed system or the rear evaporator needs hands on it.

Warm fresh food, cold freezer

This is the call we get most. It is rarely a low refrigerant charge.

Refrigerator and freezer columns are separate machines. Each has its own sealed system, its own evaporator and its own air path. When one drifts warm and the other holds, the fault sits inside that one cabinet.

Air management comes first. A frosted evaporator blocks airflow completely. A stuck damper leaves the coil cold and the compartment warm. An evaporator fan can spin freely and still move nothing once the blade cracks at the hub.

Those three faults look identical from the front of the appliance. They cost very different amounts. So we confirm before we quote.

Ice makers fail in a sequence

Ice is the second call, and the useful thing about an ice maker is that it does not fail all at once. It fails in order: cubes come out small, then hollow, then the mold stops releasing altogether.

Where in that sequence you are decides what the repair is. At the small-cube stage the fill is short, and the causes worth ruling out first are free — an overdue water filter, a partly closed supply valve, or a kinked line behind the cabinet. A restricted filter starves the ice maker and produces the exact complaint of a failing fill valve, and we have seen perfectly good valves replaced on that mistake.

Once harvest has stopped completely, it is no longer a supply question. The mold heater releases the cube from the mold at the end of the cycle, and when it has failed the ice is made and simply never let go. That usually arrives alongside a restricted valve rather than instead of it, so both get quoted together.

We measure actual fill volume before condemning anything. A slow fill and a dead mold heater produce an identical complaint at the door and two different invoices.

Frost, drains and door alarms

Ice building on the rear wall means the defrost cycle is not clearing the coil. That points at a heater, a bimetal, a sensor or the control board, in roughly that order of frequency.

Water pooling under the crisper is a blocked drain, usually a plug of ice at the trough. Warm humid air entering the cabinet is a gasket that has taken a set and no longer springs back. Both are inexpensive. Both get worse if left.

A door alarm with the door shut and the gasket seated is a switch fault or a hinge that has dropped. On a tall column, a few millimetres of sag at the top of the door is enough to break the seal at the header.

Sealed system work

Compressors, condensers and evaporators are refrigerant work. Our technicians hold EPA Section 608 certification, which that work legally requires.

We will also tell you when a sealed-system repair is not worth doing. On a column past fifteen years that has already had one compressor, it frequently is not, and we would rather say so than sell the job.

Before you call

Two checks take a minute and sometimes save a visit.

  • Pull the toe grille and look at the condenser. In Jacksonville, pet hair and dust mat that coil quickly, and a matted coil raises the whole cabinet temperature.
  • Confirm the water filter is not overdue. A restricted filter starves the ice maker and mimics a failing fill valve.

Access, weight and the route

A column is trimmed into a fixed opening, finished with a custom panel, and it is heavy. Moving one is a two-person job with a plan for the floor underneath, and in a kitchen with stone or wide-plank wood that plan comes before the tools do.

The panel comes off first. The unit then moves on its rails rather than being walked out on its corners, which is how floors get marked and how door alignment gets lost. Levelling on the way back in is part of the job, not an afterthought: on a tall appliance a small error at the base shows as a visible gap at the top, and a column that leans does not seal at the door header.

Where the install is genuinely at fault — an opening cut short, a cutout that never had the specified clearance, a condenser that cannot breathe because the toe area was boxed in during a later remodel — we will tell you that rather than fitting the same part a second time.

Parts and lead times

Common sealed-system, fan, damper and control parts usually arrive within a few days. Cosmetic panels, handles, trim and discontinued boards run considerably longer.

On older columns the correct part is often specific to the serial number rather than the model, so we record the full rating plate before ordering anything. Whatever the lead time turns out to be, it is quoted with the written estimate, before you commit to the repair.
