Thermador Hood Runs but Smoke Crosses the Room

Hoods and downdrafts that pull nothing, roar, or stop responding. Ducting is often the real fault.

Symptoms we get called for

  • Blower runs at full speed but smoke still crosses the room
  • Downdraft rises part way and then stops or drops back
  • Hood controls light up but the motor does not start
  • Noise has changed to a rattle, a whine or a rhythmic knock
  • Lights work while every fan speed does nothing
  • Hood switches itself on or changes speed with no input

Ventilation is the appliance most often blamed for someone else’s mistake. A hood can be in perfect condition and still fail to clear a kitchen, because the performance you feel is decided by the duct, not the motor.

So we start at the wall, not at the hood.

Weak extraction with a healthy blower

If the blower spins hard and smoke still drifts past the canopy, look for one of four things.

The duct run is too long or has too many turns. Every elbow costs airflow, and a hood that was moved during a remodel usually gained elbows.

The duct diameter was reduced somewhere. A transition down to a smaller pipe in an attic or a soffit throttles the whole system, and it is invisible from the kitchen.

The exterior damper is stuck. In Jacksonville that is often paint, a wasp nest, or corrosion. Near the beaches, salt air seizes exterior dampers within a few years.

Or the house has no make-up air. A tight modern kitchen with a strong hood cannot exhaust what it cannot replace. The hood pulls against a sealed envelope and moves far less than its rating.

We check all four before recommending a part.

Blower faults

A hood with working lights and a dead fan is an electrical fault, not a mechanical one. The lighting and motor circuits are separate.

Remote and inline blowers complicate this. If your blower sits in the attic or on an exterior wall, the failure and the controls are in different places, and diagnosing from the kitchen alone is guesswork. Tell us at booking whether the blower is in the hood or remote, so we arrive with access planned.

Attic-mounted blowers in this climate live hot and humid. Bearings and capacitors are the usual casualties.

Noise

Noise tells you a lot.

A rattle at one speed only is usually a loose baffle, a filter that is not seated, or a panel screw that has backed out. It is cheap to fix.

A whine that rises with speed is a bearing. A rhythmic knock is an imbalanced wheel, often caused by grease built up unevenly on the blades. Grease loading is the reason we ask how the filters are cleaned.

Filters belong in the dishwasher, on a regular schedule. A loaded baffle filter both starves the blower and unbalances the wheel.

Downdrafts

Downdraft ventilation adds a mechanism, and mechanisms fail.

A downdraft that rises partway and stops is usually the drive belt, the motor, or an obstruction in the track. Grease and crumbs collect in the slot and bind the carriage. Cleaning the track is part of every visit.

A downdraft that will not rise at all is a control or a motor fault, and those are separated by a simple test at the unit.

Downdrafts also share the duct problem above, and they suffer it more. They fight rising heat by design, so any restriction in the run shows up immediately.

Coastal installs

Along 32250 and 32233, salt air attacks hoods hard. Stainless pits at the seams, exterior caps corrode, and roof or wall dampers stop closing. A damper that no longer closes lets humid air back into the kitchen and lets the blower motor sit in salt.

Rinsing exterior caps with fresh water twice a year genuinely extends their life.

What does this repair cost in Jacksonville?

Flat $80 to diagnose it, credited to the repair. The rows below are the bands this appliance actually lands in once the part is fitted and the panel is back on.

Thermador repair bands in Jacksonville, Duval County — parts and labor fitted, with the $80 diagnostic credited against them.
What failed Cost, fitted
The diagnostic visit $80, credited
Control board or touch panel $410–$1,010
Convection fan or motor $250–$660

A band, not a quote. Which part failed, whether the appliance has to come out of its cabinet to reach it, and how much of it has to be stripped to get at the part all move the figure inside it, so the firm number is written down once the fault has a name. Written estimate before any part is ordered or fitted. The whole price book is on the pricing page.

Before you book this repair

How much does ventilation repair cost in Jacksonville?

The visit is a flat $80 diagnostic, credited to the repair. Finished jobs on this appliance land in $250–$1,010 for parts and labor together — convection fan or motor ($250–$660) at the light end, control board or touch panel ($410–$1,010) at the heavy one. The firm figure is written down before a part is ordered.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

A comparable Thermador wall oven, rangetop or column, appliance only — before delivery, installation or cabinetry. National appliance pricing, not Florida labour. That puts replacement at $4,200–$14,500 against a repair band of $250–$1,010. If the diagnosis says the appliance is not worth the work, you get that in writing too, and the diagnostic is what you paid for.

Blower runs at full speed but smoke still crosses the room. What gets checked first?

The supply and the installation before the electronics: the circuit feeding the appliance, then the opening, the clearance and the air path, then the mechanism, and the board last. A board fitted behind an unstable circuit fails again, which is the most expensive way to be wrong about a diagnosis.

What owners said after this repair

4.7 out of 5, from 66 customer reviews. A few of them are below; the rest sit on the page for the repair or the part of town they were filed in. One kitchen and one fault apiece, printed as they reached us.
  • The exterior damper had corroded open and the hood roared without shifting much air. He replaced the damper and the pitted collar, then checked the run. Quieter, and it actually clears the cooktop now.

    Desmond P.

  • The remote blower in the attic had stopped answering the hood switch. He traced the fault to the control link rather than the motor, which was a relief. The hood pulls properly again.

    Lucasta B.

  • The extractor over our range had lost most of its pull. He measured the airflow, found the ducting crushed where it turns into the attic, and reworked that section. The difference in the kitchen is night and day.

    Georgiana Y.
